The position is a two-year appointment and receives 50% reassigned time. Applications are reviewed by FA and the Academic Senate with final decision made by Judy Miner. Interested faculty should send a letter of interest to Pat Hyland by December 10. The following committees still need faculty members: Program Planning Committee HRAC Senators are asked to make the announcement to their faculty and recruit members. One senator announced that her job as TRC chair is made more difficult without a dean for the division. As there is still no list of administrative comprehensive reviews, there is concern that faculty will not be able to participate in these reviews. Paul hopes to get a list and a timeline for faculty participation as soon as possible. Action and Information Items One Book/One College/One Community Jordana Finnegan and Mary Thomas reported on the many activities being planned for the book, The Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle. They remarked that there has been good publicity for the project. Some activities being planned are: Book discussions Fall Literature on Location class @ Middlefield Winter English 1B/California History learning community Spring Jordana and Mary are asking senators to announce to their faculty that they are seeking help in other projects. Some ideas are: Panel on immigration issues Film series Debate on immigration Student art/writing contest Faculty interested in heading one of the above (or any other) projects should contact Jordana and/or Mary. District Senate Paul gave some background about the difficulty of maintaining interest in the District Senate. He presented the advantages and disadvantages of 17Թϒs participation in the District Senate. Senators are asked to share with their faculty that the Senate is discussing the idea of withdrawing from the District Senate and, thus, disbanding the District Senate. Faculty Positions 2008 In a letter to the Roundtable, Judy Miner announced that four positions will be filled for 2008-09: Math Dental Hygiene English Counseling Proposition 92 Rich Hansen presented information about Proposition 92, Community College Governance, Funding Stabilization, and Student Fee Reduction Act, that will be on the ballot in February. A meeting will be held on November 27 at Union Hall, San Jose, to build a coalition to support the proposition. Faculty are encouraged to attend the meeting and support the get out the vote campaign. Faculty Development Amy Gerstein presented the executive summary of findings and recommendations of the report entitled Professional Development Inquiry: Mapping and Analyzing the Experiences of New Faculty. She asked senators to provide feedback to the report and to give ideas on ways to revitalize staff development at 17Թ. Responses included the following: Creating more infrastructure (including a faculty staff development committee) Allocating space for a staff development center Allocating space for part-time faculty Offering a variety of paid workshops for part-time faculty Workshops on organizational psychology Workshops and training to make the tenure process more formative Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum workshops Informational workshops highlighting the needs of various student populations (e.g., international, LGBT, immigrant, Latino) Faculty reports on conferences attended Amy summarized the general themes discussed by the senate as follows: senators provided a list of ideas for workshops; senators are interested in seeing better mechanisms for increasing communication among faculty across the campus; senators want to tap into existing faculty expertise; senators would like to see improvement in the professional development nature of the tenure review process; and, finally, senators are very interested in continuing professional development in both formal and informal ways. Meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m. 17Թ-De Anza Community College District Board of Trustees Board Policy Manual DRAFT (November 7, 2007) Withdrawal 9999 A student may withdraw from one or more quarter-length courses through the last day of the eighth week of the term, or 75% of the term for short-term courses (including summer courses). Such withdrawal will be reflected with a notation of W on the transcript. The appropriate faculty shall be notified of such withdrawals. For the purposes of this policy, the term appropriate faculty means the instructor of each course in question, or, in the event the instructor cannot be contacted, the department chair or division dean. No such notation shall be made on the academic record of the student who withdraws during the first four weeks of a quarter-length course (referred to as a drop), or 33% of the term for a short-term course (including summer courses). (CHECK TITLE V IF THERE IS AN ACTUAL REQUIREMENT) The academic record of a student who remains in a class beyond the time allowed by District policy must reflect a symbol other than a W, as determined by faculty. Withdrawal from a class after the withdrawal deadline is authorized with verifiable extenuating circumstances upon petition of the student or his or her representative, and after consultation with the instructor(s) or appropriate faculty. Extenuating circumstances are verified cases of accidents, illnesses or other circumstances beyond the control of the student. The W grade shall not be used in calculating grade point averages, but excessive Ws shall be used as factors in probation and dismissal procedures. Military Withdrawal occurs when a student who is a member of an active or reserve United States military service receives orders compelling a withdrawal from courses. Upon verification of such orders, a withdrawal symbol may be assigned at any time during the quarter. The withdrawal symbol so assigned may be a W or , if necessary to distinguish military withdrawals, may be a MW. (QUESTION ABOUT FOREIGN MILITARY SERVICE) 17Թ-De Anza Community College District Board of Trustees Board Policy Manual DRAFT (November 7, 2007) Graduation Requirements for Degrees and Certificates 6120 The District grants the degrees of Associate in Arts and Associate in Science to those students who have completed a minimum of 90 quarter units in degree-applicable courses, completed a minimum of 24 quarter units at either 17Թ or De Anza, and maintained a 2.0 grade point average or better in their college coursework. Students must also complete the general education requirements set forth by the college and complete 27 quarter units in an area of emphasis in a discipline or related disciplines as defined by the college. Students may be awarded a Certificate of Achievement upon successful completion of a minimum of 27 quarter units of degree-applicable coursework designed as a pattern of learning experiences that may be oriented either to career or general education. Procedures to enact the degree and certificate requirements shall be the primary responsibility of the college curriculum committees, with the appropriate involvement of the administration. Graduation requirements shall be published in the college catalogs and included in other resources that are convenient for students. 17Թ-De Anza Community College District Board of Trustees Board Policy Manual DRAFT (November 7, 2007) Philosophy of Education 6000 A democratic society is dependent on the educational attainment of its individual members; therefore, it is important that 17Թ and De Anza, as community colleges, offer educational opportunity to all members of the community who demonstrate that they are capable of profiting from such opportunity. The awarding of an Associate degree is intended to represent more than an accumulation of units; it is to symbolize a successful attempt on the colleges to create powerful learning paradigms designed to develop students capabilities and insights in a broad array of domains. They include, but are not limited to the ability to think critically; to effectively communicate both orally and in written format; to use mathematics in the real world; to develop an understanding of other cultures and times; to engage in the process of scientific inquiry embodied in the natural, physical, and/or social sciences; and to achieve insight gained through experience in thinking about ethical problems. In addition to these accomplishments, students should possess sufficient depth in some field of knowledge to serve as the basis for future inquiry, career development, and/or the motivation for lifelong learning. The goal of General Education is to enable each student to recognize the value of intellectual inquiry, of personal responsibility, and of ethical behavior; to discover the interdisciplinary nature of knowledge; to participate in the process of self-understanding and of creative expression; and to demonstrate critical awareness of and informed participation in a complex society characterized by increasing global interdependence and by rapid and significant change. Thus, the general education program provides coherence to undergraduate education and affords the students the opportunity to develop an integrated overview of the diverse fields of human knowledge. The Board, relying primarily on the Academic Senate and in consultation with the Associated Students and the administration, shall develop curriculum and strict academic standards which will challenge all students to meet these goals. The colleges shall maintain a current listing of general education requirements for the AA/AS degrees and make them available in the College Catalog and the schedule of classes. Changes to the general education requirements and to the AA/AS degrees shall be reviewed by the Board of Trustees, relying primarily on the advice of the faculty. Doc name: articulation_bd 17Թ-De Anza Community College District Board of Trustees Board Policy Manual Draft (November 16, 2007) Articulation #_____________? In compliance with Education Code sections 66738 and 66740, each college in the District shall have a defined articulation process for general education, transfer education, and vocational/occupational education. These formal articulation agreements may vary according to the type of agreement or range of participants. Types of Articulation Agreements Course to Course Major to Major Program to Program General Education (Breadth) to General Education (Breadth) Major Prerequisite to Major Prerequisite Lower Division Courses to Upper Division Courses Articulation is the process of faculty review and evaluation used to determine in what manner course work completed at one institution will meet requirements for admissions, transfer credit, general education and/or major preparation at another institution. The purpose of articulation between institutions is to facilitate the process of enrolling students from high school to 17Թ and/or De Anza College and from the colleges to four year institutions. The 17Թ-De Anza Community College District shall endeavor to eliminate barriers and simplify the process to support student transition from one institution to another wherever possible. Each college shall have an Articulation Officer who shall have primary responsibility for facilitating the development and maintenance of articulation agreements. Courses and programs, as deemed appropriate at 17Թ and De Anza College, shall be articulated with local high schools proximate to the district, with the California State Universities, the Universities of California and government and independent accredited postsecondary institutions. The Chancellor shall adopt regulations to provide for implementation of this policy. Student may receive college credit for articulated high school courses. Administrative Regulations: Articulation # ______________? Articulation/Transfer Functions The Articulation Officers shall assist in the development and coordination of faculty approved articulation agreements between 17Թ and De Anza College and post secondary institutions as well as other government and independent accredited postsecondary institutions. The Articulation Officers shall serve as the principle contact and liaison between the college and other institutions on issues as they relate to articulation of coursework. The Articulation Officers shall serve as a member and resource to the faculty, Campus Curriculum Committee and General Education Committee in the capacity as designated by the campus Curriculum Committee. The Articulation Officers shall review and confirm accuracy and information in the college catalogs pertaining to the transerferability of courses and the general education patters for four-year institutions. Articulation/High School Each college shall designate a principle contact to serve as a liaison between the college and proximate high schools to develop, maintain and coordinate faculty approved articulation as deemed appropriate. The principle contact designated at each college to serve as a liaison between the college and proximate high schools shall review and confirm the accuracy and information published in college materials pertaining to the transferability of courses and other academics articulated with proximate high schools. An articulated high school course is a course determined by appropriate 17Թ-De Anza faculty in conjunction with the colleges academic department to be comparable to a specific community college course. The appropriate discipline will establish standards for credit. D`67Ykln $NO 5 G H I R S - .
